We are looking for an experienced (min. 5 years) GIS developer to work as part of the GIS Solutions Team developing GIS applications and tools to support our business processes.
We would like to streamline their FTTH design, build and operate processes. GIS is a key part of these processes and customising the system to make these tasks easier and more robust is a key part of the work required.
The core GIS is Smallsworld PNI. Network designs are produced using automated FTTH design software or by making use of contract planners. The designs undergo several changes as they go from planning to construction and there are various issues that need to be resolved at each stage. Some of these issues will require in depth analysis and creative thinking to prevent data corruption.
Our operations systems require GIS data to be integrated with other applications including Salesforce and other business processes. Smallworld does not lend itself to this and we have alternative plans involving a variety of open source tools.
Our design tools use QGIS and knowledge of developing QGIS plugins is required as is knowledge of either Leaflet or OpenLayers to facilitate embedding maps in Salesforce.
The majority of this role's development activity will involve analysis existing data and processes and enhancing them using Open Source GIS tools. Smallworld will remain the database of record as it is used for provisioning. The satellite systems will use that data combined with other business data to create dashboards, maps and reports.
Some of what you will be doing will include:
*Configuration/ customisation of our existing software and development of new applications within the GIS Solution Team.
*Extending the existing FTTH design software to cater for all of our existing and future architecture and equipment types.
*Development of interfaces to other business systems.
*Gathering user requirements, writing specifications, coding and testing solutions.
*Developing data import/export tools and reports.
*Some system administration work especially for PostGIS.
*Provide technical support on the GIS programs / systems developed
*Maintain and troubleshoot existing systems, as well as upgrading software
*This role is as a member of the Systems and Development Team reporting to the GIS Solutions Manager. has a GIS architect and another GIS developer.
*The GIS is used by our GIS Team, which is concentrated in Warrington, and managed by our GIS Manager. It is also used by a number of departments across including: Operations, Network Planning and our Emergency Response Team.
*The candidate will also be working closing with the Application Support and Development Team in integration of their tools into the wider enterprise stack.
*The candidate would need to be articulate and willing to liaise with people from all of these groups.
To be successful in this role you'll need:
*Knowledge of Open Source GIS.
*Knowledge of the standards of the OGC such as WMS, WFS, WMTS
*Knowledge of Python or comparable language
*Proficient with QGIS.
*Experience of using Python to automate QGIS and write plugins.
*Experience of using GDAL.
*Postgres/PostGIS database administration.
*Experience with loading data into PostGIS.
*Experience with GeoServer or QGIS Server.
*Experience of using Leaflet or OpenLayers.
If you have any of the following skills that would really help but is not essential:
*Experience of utilities especially telecoms.
*Knowledge of Smallworld or another system used for enterprise level GIS.
*Exposure to other programming languages such as : Java, Ruby, Bash, PhP etc.
*Knowledge of the architecture and equipment used in GPON networks.
*Experience of Salesforce and knowledge of Ajax.
*Knowledge of AWS.
*Preferably computer science or related degree
